Chapter Twelve
“While enemies rush to attack, the Key King plots and plans.”
High Prophet Thomas H. Locksten—Prophecy of Keys
IT TOOK several minutes before we were able to get the duke settled in an anonymous rented cab. I didn’t want a carriage with the duke’s crest or the Lock Lords’ symbols to draw untoward attention. With his injury it would’ve been smarter to take the train, but that would expose him to too many eyes.
From the address Marbrey gave us, we headed for Third Quarter. I kept a careful watch the farther we moved from Thorne’s townhouse. Nothing suspicious triggered my instincts, but I kept the bunny tucked in my arms in case we needed to take a different route and circle back to lose any followers.
When the cab came to a halt, I gave the driver the money Duke Lear handed me and wrapped an arm around his waist to keep him upright. I’d had him change into his plainest clothes and wear a hat to cover his face. No need to announce a Lock Lord was about. Granted, they were still nicer than anything I owned, but they lacked the elaborate details of the usual royal fair. Black also hid any blood caused by his wounds not healing properly. At least Marbrey hadn’t hunkered down in First Quarter; I don’t know that I would’ve trusted the duke there no matter how well hidden the accommodations.
I set Amalia down, hoping she’d lead us in the proper direction. After a few hops around, she darted to the left. We followed slower as to not garner attention. Nothing drew the guards faster than people running down the street. They assumed you were a thief and only asked questions after a good beating.
“Stay close. We don’t know which guards are loyal,” I muttered to him.
Lear nodded. “Thanks, I figured that out on my own.”
My loyalty to Thorne prevented me from dropping Lear’s arm and leaving him in the middle of the street.
The bunny hopped down a dark alley. I hesitated to follow, but with a nudge from the duke I reluctantly dragged him along. No good ever came from heading recklessly into situations.
“Oss.” My name whispered caught my attention. I headed farther into the darkness. Luckily I saw Marbrey’s pale face before I started pulling out the knives. He waved me closer. “Why are you here?”
“I need a place to stash someone. It’s an emergency, Marbrey.”
The inventor examined us both before turning to the solid wall behind him and pulling out a brick. Before I could ask what he was doing, the entire section sank inward.
“How in the blazes did he do that?” Duke Lear asked.
“Sometimes it’s better not to ask,” I muttered. No way would I get involved in a discussion over how Marbrey’s twisty mind operated or the bits of magic he could manipulate to get things to work. Lear might be Thorne’s brother, but he was still a Lock Lord, and in my opinion, the less he knew the better off we’d all be.
